Presence Over Promise — And the Path to Intimacy
Many people want God’s blessings without His presence.
They want the Promised Land… but not the Lord who leads them there.
In Exodus 33, after the golden calf, God tells Israel they will still receive the land — but He will not go with them (Exodus 33:3). They could have the victory, the promise, the inheritance… just without His presence.
And Moses responds with words that should mark every believer:
“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15)
Moses understood something we often forget:
The blessing is not the land.
The blessing is Him.
“Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides You.” — Psalm 73:25
But here’s the deeper layer — Moses didn’t suddenly crave God’s presence in that moment.
He had cultivated it.
He met with God in the tent of meeting (Exodus 33:7–11).
He listened.
He obeyed.
He lingered.
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8
Intimacy didn’t happen overnight.
And neither does ours.
“The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him.” — Psalm 25:14
The only way the Lord teaches us is through time with Him — through reading His Word, studying it, sitting with it.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” — 2 Timothy 3:16
“That I may know Him…” — Philippians 3:10
That’s how we learn His character.
That’s how we recognize His voice.
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” — John 10:27
That’s how we begin to understand His ways.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105
You don’t truly know someone without spending time with them.
I’ve been married for many years, and we are still learning each other. Still discovering nuances. Still growing in understanding. Real intimacy develops in layers — over time, through consistency.
How much more with the Lord?
We cannot crave God’s presence yet neglect His Word.
We cannot ask for direction but avoid daily communion.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6
We cannot want intimacy without investment.
“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you…” — John 15:7
If we want His presence to guide us — in leadership, in motherhood, in marriage, in frontline work, in moments of crisis — we must cultivate it in the quiet.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
The Promised Land without God is just geography.
Success without His presence is hollow.
Calling without communion is exhausting.
“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” — Mark 8:36
Presence over promise.
Relationship over reward.
Lord, teach us to want You more than what You give — and give us the discipline to sit with You until we know You deeply.
In Jesus name
We pray
Amen
