Digging Deeper: A Bible Study on Mary Magdalene and the Restoration of Identity
Introduction
Mary Magdalene's story is one of the clearest examples of redemption in Scripture. She was delivered, restored, transformed, and entrusted with sharing the greatest news in history—the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
As you study her life, pay attention to a recurring theme:
Jesus never defined Mary by her condition. He restored her identity and called her into relationship with Him.
As you read, reflect on this question:
Am I allowing my past, my wounds, my struggles, or my failures to define me more than Christ does?
Session 1: Delivered by Jesus
Read
Luke 8:1–3
Key Verse
"Mary (called Magdalene), from whom seven demons had gone out." (Luke 8:2)
Observe
What do these verses tell us about Mary after her encounter with Jesus?
Notice that Scripture immediately moves from her deliverance to her discipleship.
She was no longer simply someone who had been rescued.
She became someone who followed Jesus.
Reflect
What stands out to you about Mary's transformation?
Why do you think Jesus invited broken people to follow Him?
How does the world often define people by their struggles?
Have you ever allowed a wound, failure, diagnosis, or past sin to become part of your identity?
Application
What is one label from your past that Christ may be asking you to surrender?
Prayer
Lord, help me see myself through Your eyes rather than through the labels the world has placed upon me. Thank You that my identity is found in You.
Session 2: Faithful at the Cross
Read
Matthew 27:55–56Mark 15:40–41John 19:25
Key Verse
"Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother ... and Mary Magdalene." (John 19:25)
Observe
Many followers fled during Jesus' crucifixion.
Mary stayed.
Reflect
What does Mary's presence at the cross reveal about her devotion?
Why is it often easier to follow Jesus when life is going well?
What does faithful discipleship look like during seasons of suffering?
Application
How can you remain close to Christ even when life is difficult or confusing?
Prayer
Jesus, give me a faith that remains near You, even when circumstances are painful or uncertain.
Session 3: Watching and Waiting
Read
Matthew 27:61Mark 15:47
Key Verse
"Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb." (Matthew 27:61)
Observe
Mary remained present even when everything appeared lost.
She did not yet know resurrection was coming.
Reflect
Have you ever experienced a season where God seemed silent?
What can we learn from Mary's willingness to remain present?
Why is waiting often difficult for believers?
Application
Where is God asking you to trust Him while you wait?
Prayer
Lord, help me remain faithful even when I cannot yet see what You are doing.
Session 4: Seeking Jesus
Read
John 20:1–2Matthew 28:1–10
Key Verse
"Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb." (John 20:1)
Observe
Before sunrise, before certainty, before understanding everything, Mary sought Jesus.
Reflect
What does Mary's determination reveal about her heart?
How do you seek Jesus in your daily life?
What distractions compete for your attention?
Application
What practical step can you take this week to intentionally seek Christ?
Prayer
Jesus, create in me a hunger to seek You above all else.
Session 5: When Jesus Calls Her Name
Read
John 20:11–18
Key Verses
"Jesus said to her, 'Mary.'" (John 20:16)
"I have chosen you and have not rejected you." (Isaiah 41:9, NIV)
Observe
Everything changed when Jesus called Mary by name.
He did not identify her by her past.
He called her according to who she was.
Reflect
Why do you think Mary recognized Jesus when He spoke her name?
What labels has the world tried to place on you?
What labels have you placed on yourself?
How does Isaiah 41:9 speak to your identity in Christ?
Application
Complete the following statement:
Because of Christ, I am ______________________________.
Prayer
Father, thank You that You have chosen me and have not rejected me. Help me live from my identity as Your beloved child rather than from the labels of my past.
Session 6: Sent with Purpose
Read
John 20:17–18Mark 16:9
Key Verse
"Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: 'I have seen the Lord!'" (John 20:18)
Observe
The woman once known for her brokenness became the first witness of the resurrection.
Reflect
What does this reveal about God's view of redeemed people?
How does God often use our past for His glory?
What testimony has God given you to share?
Application
Who is one person who needs to hear what Christ has done in your life?
Prayer
Lord, use my story for Your glory. Help me faithfully share the hope and redemption I have found in You.
Final Reflection
Trace Mary's journey:
Delivered (Luke 8:2)
Following Jesus (Luke 8:3)
Standing at the Cross (John 19:25)
Watching the Burial (Matthew 27:61)
Seeking Him at the Tomb (John 20:1)
Hearing Him Call Her Name (John 20:16)
Sent to Announce the Resurrection (John 20:17–18)
Mary's condition was part of her testimony, but it was never her identity.
The same is true for us.
The world may define us by our wounds, failures, struggles, or diagnoses.
Jesus calls us by name.
And when He calls us by name, He reminds us of who we truly are:
Chosen. Beloved. Redeemed. Not rejected. A child of God.
