A Course in Miracles: When Christian Language Leads Away from Christ
"Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so." — Acts 17:11
In a world filled with spiritual teachings, self-help philosophies, and claims of divine revelation, Christians must exercise discernment. Not every teaching that uses the name of Jesus actually points people to the biblical Jesus. Not every spiritual experience originates from God. Not every message from the unseen realm is trustworthy.
One modern example is A Course in Miracles (ACIM), a book that has gained a large following among those seeking spiritual growth, inner peace, healing, and forgiveness. The book claims to contain teachings dictated through an inner voice that Helen Schucman identified as Jesus.
At first glance, many Christians may find parts of the course appealing. It speaks of love, forgiveness, peace, miracles, salvation, and Jesus. Yet the presence of biblical terminology does not make a teaching biblical. The question is not whether a teaching uses Christian words. The question is whether those words mean the same thing that Scripture teaches.
The Bereans in Acts 17:11 provide the model for believers today. They did not accept teachings simply because they sounded spiritual. They searched the Scriptures daily to determine whether what they were hearing was true. We must do the same.
Satan's Strategy: Counterfeit, Not Obvious Rejection
One of Satan's greatest tactics is not to convince people to reject God outright. Instead, he often introduces counterfeits that resemble the truth while subtly distorting it.
In Genesis 3, the serpent did not completely deny God's Word. He questioned it, twisted it, and added confusion.
"Did God actually say...?"
The enemy still operates the same way today. He takes biblical concepts and redefines them. He uses familiar language but changes the meaning. What appears to be truth can become deception when separated from God's Word.
Paul warned believers:
"For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed... you put up with it readily enough." (2 Corinthians 11:4)
Notice that Paul did not say people would necessarily reject Jesus. He warned that they would accept a different Jesus.
Comparing A Course in Miracles with Scripture
1. The Problem: Sin or Perception?
A Course in Miracles
Humanity's problem is mistaken thinking, ego, and faulty perception.
Sin is often treated as an illusion.
The Bible
Humanity's problem is sin.
Sin is real and separates us from God.
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)
Scripture never teaches that sin is merely an illusion. It teaches that sin is a genuine condition affecting every human being.
2. The Solution: Enlightenment or Salvation?
A Course in Miracles
The solution is a shift in consciousness and perception.
Spiritual growth comes through enlightenment and self-discovery.
The Bible
The solution is reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith." (Ephesians 2:8)
The gospel is not self-realization. It is salvation through Christ.
3. Jesus: Teacher or Savior?
A Course in Miracles
Jesus functions primarily as a spiritual guide and teacher.
The Bible
Jesus is the Son of God, Savior, Lord, and the only way to the Father.
"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)
The biblical Jesus did not come merely to improve our thinking. He came to rescue sinners through His death and resurrection.
4. Forgiveness
A Course in Miracles
Forgiveness is often described as recognizing that the offense was not ultimately real.
The Bible
Forgiveness acknowledges that sin and offenses are real but extends grace because Christ first forgave us.
"Forgive as the Lord forgave you." (Colossians 3:13)
Biblical forgiveness is powerful precisely because a real debt existed.
5. Miracles
A Course in Miracles
Miracles are shifts in perception.
The Bible
Miracles are acts of God's power that reveal His authority and glory.
While believers should experience transformed thinking, Scripture does not define miracles merely as altered perception. The greatest miracle is the salvation of a sinner through Jesus Christ.
What About the Unseen Realm?
As someone who spent years involved in spiritualism, mediumship, and New Age practices, I understand how convincing spiritual experiences can feel.
Many people assume that if a message sounds loving, peaceful, encouraging, or wise, it must come from God. Scripture teaches otherwise.
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God." (1 John 4:1)
The Bible repeatedly warns that spiritual deception exists. Not every supernatural experience originates from the Holy Spirit.
This is why Christians must never build their beliefs on private revelations, inner voices, mystical experiences, or spiritual impressions. Every experience must be tested against the Word of God.
If a message contradicts Scripture, it does not matter how peaceful it feels, how profound it sounds, or how many people follow it.
God will never contradict His own Word.
Why People Are Drawn to These Teachings
People are often searching for peace.
They want freedom from anxiety.
They want healing from past wounds.
They want forgiveness.
They want purpose.
They want hope.
These desires are not wrong.
The tragedy is that many seek answers everywhere except where God has already provided them.
The Bible addresses every one of these struggles. Scripture teaches forgiveness, peace, identity, healing, renewal of the mind, freedom from fear, and reconciliation with God. Yet it does so through the truth of Christ rather than through human philosophy or spiritual enlightenment.
The Berean Challenge
The answer to deception is not fear.
The answer is discernment.
Acts 17:11 should be the model for every believer:
"They received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so."
Every book.
Every teacher.
Every sermon.
Every podcast.
Every spiritual experience.
Every claimed revelation.
Test it against Scripture.
The enemy has always been skilled at counterfeits. He often wraps deception in spiritual language and presents it as wisdom. But God's people are called to recognize truth by measuring everything against His Word.
Christianity is not built upon private revelations, mystical experiences, or inner voices.
It is built upon the finished work of Jesus Christ, revealed through the trustworthy Word of God.
When searching for truth, let Scripture be your final authority.
